About ABA
Welcome to the official website for Alpaca Breeders of Arizona!
ABA is a volunteer organization and is run by its members! All members contribute to make ABA great. We poll membership to decide educational topics and events that are of interest to the group. Visitors with like-minded goals are welcome - please contact anyone on our members list or a Board of Directors member if you have questions regarding our organization.
ABA is a recognized Arizona affiliate organization of the national Alpaca Owners Association (AOA). ABA is a non-profit 501(c)(5) Arizona Corporation. Our goals focus on serving Arizona alpaca owners through education and networking in this rapidly advancing livestock industry.
ABA was blessed to have a handful of alpaca farmers with a vision for the future form this non-profit organization in the 1990's when alpacas were unheard of to most people. Those forward thinking farms had found the wonderful world of alpacas, and were also finding that the great state of Arizona was perfect for raising alpacas.
Throughout the last two decades, the Alpaca Breeders of Arizona have hosted countless educational events such as Neonatal Birthing Lab with Dr. Pat Long, A Camelidynamics training and handling class with the well-known Marty McGee Bennett. We've hosted senior Fleece Judge Cheryl Gehly in 2014 and 2019 who took us on a deep dive into fleece traits and all about fiber. We have hosted a full weekend Veterinary seminar with expert alpaca vet Dr. Pamela Walker.
Quarterly affiliate meetings cover a number of topics that interest alpaca owners from nutrition, alpaca breeding, cria birthing, and all things fiber related - such as fiber testing options and EPD trait database education. We occasionally do telephone-meetings and distance education as well.
Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic our quarterly meetings were suspended, but have kept in touch via phone and Zoom meetings. We are looking forward to resuming meetings in 2022.
